Relevant facets include the evolution of the stamp from concept to production. Emphasis is given to first day activities, with the bulk of the book devoted to cacheted first day covers (FDCs). The two appendices are: an index of issue-specific cachet makers and an expansive biography of cachet makers.

Since airmail routings are very different from shipping routes across oceans, this book attempts to summarize the routes used for airmail sent to the United States from all corners of the world beginning in 1920.
